Choosing a funeral venue in Christchurch

Chapel, hall, home or outdoors — what each option asks of you, and the practical things to check.

The right venue is usually the one that suits the number of people and the character of the person, in that order.

Things to check before you book

  • Realistic capacity, including standing room and space for wheelchairs and walkers
  • Parking, and whether older guests can get from the car to the door easily
  • Sound system and whether it can play your music and a microphone reliably
  • Screen or projector if you want photographs or video
  • A separate space for family before and after the service
  • Catering — on site, brought in, or moving somewhere else afterwards

Outdoors

A garden, a beach or a farm paddock can be the most fitting place of all, and it needs a plan B. Wind ruins sound before it ruins anything else, so a portable PA and a wet-weather alternative are not optional in Canterbury.
